Just like how Rome wasn’t built in a day, neither is a skincare routine. It takes precision and multiple steps to crack the code for the perfect skincare routine, and incorporating night creams sure is one of them. Experts weigh in on a detailed guide to choosing the perfect night cream.
Acing a skincare routine down to a tee sure is a blessing, a blessing that demands an intense trial and error method. You just can’t doubt a beauty enthusiast’s dedication to skincare, I mean if we can travel to Korea looking for that glass skin, we can do anything. Speaking of skincare routine, night creams are my holy grail to achieve that flawless skin. Lathering sunscreens and layering moisturisers all day have their perks, but for me, it’s that one product that I end my day with. Your PM skincare routine deserves as much attention as your AM regime, as the skin gods work their magic even while you’re asleep. Considering the weather and changing environments, I have long struggled to choose the perfect night cream. That said, it’s time to snap out of this conundrum, here we have experts offering a detailed guide to choosing the right night creams.
Night creams are skincare’s holy grail! Experts weigh in
Experts’ insight into the importance of a night-time routine and a list of ingredients to follow while looking for night creams:
Dr Geetika Mittal’s detailed guide to choosing the right ingredients…
“A well-established night-time routine is important for maintaining healthy and glowing skin, it’s good for skin repair and regeneration. From hydration to brightening, choosing the right night cream allows you a better skin texture, and in order to choose the right night cream one needs to take the following instructions in mind.”
Choosing the Right Night Cream
1. Determine Your Skin Type
2. Identify Your Skin Concerns
3. Consider Your Lifestyle and Preferences
4. Check the Ingredient list
5. Patch test and start with a small amount
Essential Ingredients to Look for in a Night Cream
1. Retinol: Stimulates collagen production.
2. Hyaluronic Acid: Hydrates the skin.
3. Peptides: Short chains of amino acids that help to repair the skin barrier.
4. Niacinamide: Improves skin elasticity, reduces inflammation, and enhances skin brightness.
5. Vitamin C: Antioxidant properties help neutralize free radicals
6. Glycolic Acid: Alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) that exfoliates the skin with improving texture
7. Ceramides: Essential lipids that help repair and restore the skin’s barrier function.
8. Antioxidants: Ingredients like ferulic acid, green tea or resveratrol help neutralize free radicals, reduce oxidative stress and promote overall skin health.
Dr Niti Gaur’s stance on the importance of a night-time routine and the correct application…
“Treating your skin to natural rejuvenation during the night can make it more durable during the day. A nighttime skincare routine concentrating on hydration and repair can keep your skin firm and clear. During the day, the skin is in defence mode, protecting itself from harmful UV rays, dust, bacterial growth, and pollution. Therefore, your daytime regimen should include sunscreen, moisturiser, and antioxidant serums. However, at night, the skin is in repair mode to rectify the DNA damage occurring during the day. This repair of skin cells appears to peak at night. Therefore, night creams should be applied as follows:”
• Apply Water-based products first. Oil-based products should be used on top to seal everything else in.
• So, if a serum is oil-based, it would be applied last, not immediately after cleansing, like a traditional water-based serum.
• Night creams should be of thicker consistency than day creams, and should include ingredients like Retinol, Hyaluronic acid, Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA), Ceramides, Shea Butter, and Peptide complexes, according to the skin type and concern.
