What is a passing grade in UM-Dearborn? ›

Undergraduates must achieve a required 2.0 cumulative UM-Dearborn GPA. Students must complete academic program within 150% of published length of program. Graduate students must complete 67% of attempted courses. Graduate students must maintain 3.0 CGPA or higher if required by your academic unit.

Students who have graduated from a State of Michigan high school and have earned a cumulative high school grade point average of 3.0 or above (on a 4.0 scale) will be guaranteed admission to the University of Michigan-Dearborn.

At the University of Michigan-Dearborn, you'll learn, study and grow in a small, supportive community where professors know your name, while graduating with the advantage of a Michigan degree. You'll never be lost in a large lecture hall here–our average class size is 25 students.

You'll need to receive a certain number of college credits to earn your college degree, and you'll only earn credit for courses which you pass. The passing cutoff point to satisfy general credit requirements is typically a D or above.

The normal grading range is from 55 to 100. The number grades correspond to letter grades as reflected in the chart below. The minimum passing grade is 70 (C). Any grades between 55 and 69 (D and F) are considered failing grades for which unit credit is not earned.

A grade of D- is not considered passing in any CECS course. If a CECS student earns a D- in a course from another academic unit it will not count toward a CECS degree or certificate and must be repeated.

Definition of Grades

The following grades are used: A — excellent; B — good; C — fair in undergraduate courses and minimum passing in courses for graduate credit; D — minimum passing in undergraduate courses; F — failed. In addition, plus and minus grades may be used, with the exceptions of A plus, F plus and F minus.

A grade of “D+” or lower in a course elected on a pass/fail basis is considered unsatisfactory and will be recorded as “F” (fail, no credit and no effect on grade point average).

A passing grade in an associate- or bachelor-level program is a D- or a numerical grade of 60. A passing grade in a master-level program is a C or a numerical grade of 73.
